Building History
Probably the oldest building in Lewellen, the Most Unlikely Place has a long and interesting history. Read more...
Remodel
In January 2009, Dennis and Rex Miller started gutting the building that housed Paul Temple's sign painting shop and storage area. Largely untouched since 1960, they removed the drop ceilings and inside walls and created a new space preserving old floors and exposing rafters, building new restrooms and a commercial kitchen and resurfacing walls for an art gallery. Irrigation pipe house gallery lighting. Family heirloom tables seat guests. The upper loft is used for storage and framing.
The old cottonwood tree lived on Blue Creek for many years with a rotten center. In 2009, when remodeling began, the tree fell into the lagoon exposing its enchanted center where children imagine bears and fairies live.

Family History
Dennis Miller, Jean Jensen and Rex Miller - the three artists featured at The Most Unlikely Place - are siblings who left their home of Lewellen to explore the world and returned as adults to enjoy the pleasure of extended family and rural living.
Their father's - Dennis Miller Sr. - influence can be seen in the remodel design of the building and landscaping. Their mother, Lucille Miller, was an amateur artist who loved to draw fairy tale characters and children on the backs of old envelopes and other scraps of paper. Her miniature dolls can be seen in the gallery as well as her book of poetry and short stories published by her children after her death. (Glass etching of Dennis and Lucille Miller and baby by Rex Miller.)
Eduard Miller, nephew of the artists, grew up in Fort Collins learning woodworking from his father and becoming an accomplished violinist. He now combines the best of both worlds having become a world class violin maker. His hand crafted violins can be seen at Eduard Miller Violins.
SET FIRE
Set fire to your bridges. Lay siege to your lodge.
Go frolic with angels who fly.
Abandon seclusion and safety and pride,
For billowing winds and blue skies.
The hurricane's piping may sweep you to sea,
Leaving reason and leisure and strife.
Meet the gush and the rush and the surge of the waves,
And exchange your regrets for your life.
